Senator Lisa Murkowski recently addressed long-standing concerns about transboundary mining in a Northern Journal interview, highlighting the ongoing impacts of the abandoned Tulsequah Chief mine on the Taku watershed.
"In that instance [of the abandoned Tulsequah Chief mine], we saw, just, a complete failure, and a failure that went on for decades to the point where, in British Columbia, they know that they have got to address it," Senator Murkowski said. "They know that for projects going forward, they’re kind of stained by the operation there, and so they’re making the same promises, ‘Our environmental regulations are tough. We’re going to be good stewards.’ But it’s really hard when they have failed to keep their word."
Her remarks underscore growing frustration in Alaska over years of delayed cleanup efforts and a lack of transparancy from the Canadian side.
