Gitxsan Withdrawl Of KSM

The Gitxsan Huwilp Government (GHG) has withdrawn its September 4, 2013 letter of support for Seabridge’s KSM Project issued during the Project’s environmental assessment process. 

In a very significant decision that has potential to adversely impact further development of Seabridge Gold's Kerr-Sulphurets-Mitchell (KSM) mine, the Gitxsan Huwilp Government has formally withdrawn its longstanding support for this mine. 

The unanimous decision by Gitxsan Huwilp Hereditary Chiefs of the Gitxsan Huwilp Government to withdraw their 2013 letter of support for the KSM Project was made in solidarity with the Tsetsaut Skii km Lax Ha Nation's (TSKLH) quest for meaningful consultation to address its concerns about the environmental risks a planned toxic mine tailings waste pond poses to waterways on TSKLH's traditional territory. In an August 20, 2026 Press Release the Gitxsan Huwilp Government Co-Chairs, Gwiiyeehl - Brian Williams (Gigeenix) and Moolaxan - Norman Moore (Gyeets) stated: "We stand with our neighbour, Tsetsaut Skii km Lax Ha, in calling on the Crown and Seabridge to collaboratively and meaningfully consult with all First Nations about major projects on our traditional lands, particularly where there is risk of environmental damage that could last generations" [PR].

The Southeast Alaska Indigenous Transboundary Commission (SEITC). A "Commission of 14 Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian Nations upholding our sovereign rights to steward traditional lands, water ways and sacred sites" had this statement regarding The Gitxsan First Nations actions: 

"It is critical that BC and the mining companies recognize the diversity of First Nations and Indigenous governments and approach all on a level playing field of rights, Nation by Nation. The land and waters are connected; one cannot speak for all. The effects of the mines are too widespread."
